NYC Anarchist Book Fair
Calling all builders, dreamers, ordinary folk, children, the unemployed, educators, mythmakers, students, parents, workers, lawbreakers and families interested in collective liberation for all.
Now in its fifth year, the New York City Anarchist Book Fair is a one-day exposition of books, zines, pamphlets, art, recorded music, film/video, and other cultural and very political productions of the anarchist scene worldwide. It also features two days of panel discussions, teach-ins, trainings, and other events bringing together New York City's anarchist community and providing a forum where the anarcho-curious can find out more about the global movement against capitalism, hierarchy, and the State. Held in conjunction with the NYC Film Festival and NYC Anarchist Art (and Theater) Festival, the Book Fair reflects the vibrant present-day work and struggle of the NYC anarchist community as well as its deep historical roots in New York City.
The New York City Anarchist Book Fair is for activists, artists, and the anarcho-curious to connect with one another, share and enrich the enormous field of anarchist ideas and practices.
The New York City Anarchist Book Fair aims to build a bigger and more vibrant, multigenerational anarchist community in NYC. To this end, we are a kid and family friendly space that will be offering free childcare to book fair goers. NYC has been a center for the anarchist movement for over 150 years, as well as throughout North America and around the world.

Pilgrimsferd til Nidaros
I'd like to let you know about an event happening at Live With Animals in Brooklyn this Friday, and possibly get it listed for this weeks mailing list. I've been a subscriber to Nonsense since I moved to the city last September and I absolutely love it -- it's brought a lot of good times and good people my way. I think that the event at Live With Animals is right up the Nonsense alley- life size Bunraku puppets, Norwegian folklore, a log cabin installation, and a live score by puppeteer/artist Eric Leiser.
Pilgrimsferd til Nidaros is an exhibition comprised of several elements, one being paintings celebrating the arrival of spring loosely based upon the study of 19th century Norwegian Folk Art. The paintings focus more specifically on the art form of Rosemaling (Norwegian for rose painting), an form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway. The second element of the exhibition is a Norwegian Stabbur house focusing on Nidaros, as Northern Europe's most important Christian pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages, the goal of pilgrims being the Nidaros Cathedral. Lastly, the exhibition will cover Viking art pre and post Christianity in paintings and animation. A puppet play based on the 18th century Norwegian Fairytale The Boy who went after the North Wind will be performed each night with life size puppets in Bunraku style with accompanying animation and live score by Jeffrey Leiser.

Art and Architecture 2011 at the Gowanus Ballroom
A group art exhibition and performance event featuring emerging Brooklyn artists, performers and musicians. Through the integration of a variety of media including painting, sculpture, video, performance and works on paper, the installation weaves a wide ranging fabric of form and style, which envelops the immense Gowanus Ballroom and transforms the space into a thoroughly interactive experience. This affords both artist and audience a chance to dismantle and construct anew one's perceived environment. By alternately reinforcing and undermining the suppositions defining social and physical arrangements, the exhibition implores participants to reexamine the boundaries delineating self. Artists: Aimee Bonamie, Amy Consolo, Ben Wolf, Domestic Construction, Emma Stern, Felix Morelo, Georgie Flores, Gerri Davis, Jason Gandy, Kristin Künc, Lopi LaRoe, Mathew Silver aka Heartpocalypse, Matt Stolle, Patricia Watwood, Rob Zeller, Serban Ionescu and the Objectionists, Serra Victoria B
othwell Fels, Tod Seelie, Ursula Viglietta, Vanessa Cronan, and others. A place where you know you can take friends or just yourself and dance and laugh and meet and greet. Sinking Ship Productions presents a workshop showing of:
Flatland
On the last night before the new Millennium, A. Square, an inhabitant of Flatland, is visited by a Sphere from the land of three dimensions. Sphere takes him on a journey to discover the true nature of the universe. But in Flatland, the notion of a third dimension is heresy, and one who preaches such heresy must be silenced.
The play interweaves an adaptation of Edwin A. Abbott's 1884 satirical novella with an exploration of contemporary physics theories involving extra dimensions of space.
Using puppetry, object manipulation, physical theater, and a range of technology from overhead projectors to lasers, Flatland tells the story of humanity's search to comprehend the world beyond what we see and experience. Presented in association with the Ensemble Studio Theater.

Nonsense is too long. The great thing about the internet is that it doesn't really cost much to run long listings and exhaustive descriptions. It turns out that's ... exhausting. After several complaints and a little deliberation, we're trying a new format: On the first Friday of the month we will run updated ongoing listings in each section: events, learning, and help. Other weeks we're going for leaner, meaner sections. If you're desperate for something to do on an off-Tuesday night we suggest you either look back a few issues ago in your inbox, or poke through our online archives, which you can find under the subscribe page.
Also, a note about better rock shows. Nonsense does not straight list rock shows in New York unless they occur in tandem with puppet shows or jump rope tournaments or in subway tunnels or in graveyards. For listings of good shows, especially shows that feature independent bands at quality venues like Death by Audio and those booked by hard-working promoters like Todd P or Sleep When Dead, consult resources like ohmyrockness.com, brooklynvegan.com/, sleepwhendeadnyc.com/calendar/, garagepunknyc.com, and eardrumnyc.com. For the most exhaustive list of underground shows at unusual venues, track down a copy of the extremely useful -- and handsome -- Showpaper.

***** SPACES *****
* Summer sublet in Ditmas Park. We have a lovely semi-furnished bedroom available from May 1 until the end of July in our apartment in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, located three blocks from the Beverley Road Q/B stop. The room includes a full-sized bed and some shelves on the walls and has a nice closet. There is room for a desk, dresser and bookshelf or whatever else. It's white now, but you'd be able to paint the room if you like. It has one large window facing the courtyard, which makes it nice and quiet, as itâ™s shielded from all the street noise. The room is located down a long hallway from the rest of the apartment, and is adjacent to the bathroom, which makes it nice and private. It's $750/month plus utilities. We are pescatarians but we also eat fish. We like to watch movies, listen to music, cook, bike, have a good time, and are fond of the colors red and purple. Email us at: obeverleyroad(at)gmail.com.
* One very large room available May 1, in big two-bedroom apartment in Prospect Park South, Brooklyn. Rent: $750 including wireless and utilities. At 130 East 18th Street between Tennis Court and Abemarle Street, a half-block from the Church Avenue B/Q train. A summer sublet of the entire apartment is also possible for $1350 per month. The available bedroom is huge, has a double window, two closets, space for a desk and couch. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the apartment, so there is a good deal of privacy. There is a separate kitchen, well-stocked with cooking equipment. There are all the amenities you could need within easy walking distance. Fern is a big, friendly once he knows you, ball of a cat. I am a dancer and grad student. I work a lot out of the house, but my schedule is somewhat variable. I have a partner who I sometimes go hang out with and leave the apartment to you. I am definitely not obsessive about cleaning, but I do keep things both pretty clean a
nd organized. I also travel sometimes. I make great faux-Taiwanese noodles and egg and cheese sandwiches, and I'm happy to prepare for two. My ideal roommate is a nice combination of chill and having it together enough that you pay your rent and keep the bulk of your mess in your room. Non-smoker. My room is fairly small and adjacent to the living room, so it is not an ideal situation if you are looking to have lots of loud, late night mega parties. Basically, I am just looking for someone who uses home as the place to get away from crazy New York rather than inviting it into the living room. I am open to having someone in for any number of months up to one year. There is the possibility of longer, but that would be TBA. Contact Abby, ahlevine(at)wesleyan.edu.
* Long-term and summer sublet rooms available in Brooklyn collective: large master bedroom available May 1 (month to month) with bay windows, fireplace, sitting room, two closets for $1,450 (for a couple?). Summer sublet available May 20-August 25 for $775 per month. We are a happy Brooklyn collective living environment with four bedrooms and five or six folks living here at a time. There are three female and one male permanent roommates. We are progressive 30-something professionals with busy lives, but who want to feel a sense of family and community in the house. Open friendly communication is a must, as is keeping common areas and kitchen clean. No TV in common area, but we hope to get a big projector for movie watching on wall. We periodically have dinner parties and gatherings in our large common space. We are polyamorous or poly-friendly, and seek someone comfortable with queer/bi folk and open relationships in a sex positive home. We love cooking healthy food and drin
king tea and wine with friends at home, and hope to enjoy gardening and frequent BBQs in our large backyard. We live in a big three-story house in South Park Slope with a beautiful backyard, large rooms, a bathroom on each floor, and big common spaces. Close to Prospect Avenue stop on the R, and 9th Street/4th Avenue stop on the F and G. Contact Antonia at avette(at)gmx.net and Diana at dianysia(at)gmail.com.

This week: Builder and Gowanus Ballroom Founder Josh Young
*Have you met others who like building devices for protests?*
"Yeah, I've met random protesters who are like "I built this thing." But I like to really get into it: "Okay, let's make 500 of them, and let's send them into three different vehicles in case one gets confiscated." I built a 75-peddle caterpillar bike for Reclaim the Streets 10, 14 years ago. I've made mobile, Roman candles, and put them inside of Gucci bags. People dress really fancy, walk by the protesters, accidentally set them down, light it, and then walk away. And there would be an array of harmless fireworks by the police to back them off."

Before we had a name, the Spectre Event Horizon Group used to meet at a bar to commiserate and trade what our business friends like to call best practices. The group has expanded since then, but it remains focused on smartening the crowd mind. There are no subject limits; our favorite is the incredible sci-fi present, or anything that goes toward a better understanding of human behavior and our universe's ecology. Our simple intent is to connect good minds with as much quality mind-blowing information as we can freely locate and create a space for the informal trade of specialized investigative research, presented for the non-specialist.

***** Libya's 'Fossil Water' *****
spectregroup.wordpress.com/2011/04/07/libyas-fossil-water/
"Following the Great Al-Fatah Revolution in 1969, when an army coup led by Muammar Al Qadhafi deposed King Idris, industrialization put even more strain on water supplies. Coastal aquifers became contaminated with sea water, to such an extent that the water in Benghazi (Libya's second city) was undrinkable. Finding a supply of fresh, clean water became a government priority. Oil exploration in the 1950s had revealed vast aquifers beneath Libya's southern desert. According to radiocarbon analysis, some of the water in the aquifers was 40,000 years old. Libyans call it "fossil water". Few in the West may know that Libya -- along with Egypt - sits over this Nubian Sandstone Aquifer, an ocean of extremely valuable fresh water. Control of the aquifer is priceless. This water pipeline -- buried underground deep in the desert along 4,000 km -- is the Great Man-Made River Project (GMMRP), which Gaddafi built for $25 billion without borrowing a single cent from the IMF or the World Ba
nk (what a bad example for the developing world). The GMMRP supplies Tripoli, Benghazi and the whole Libyan coastline. The amount of water is estimated by scientists to be the equivalent to 200 years of water flowing down the Nile. Compare this to the so-called three sisters -- Veolia (formerly Vivendi), Suez Ondeo (formerly Generale des Eaux) and Saur - the French companies that control over 40 percent of the global water market. All eyes must imperatively focus on whether these pipelines are bombed. An extremely possible scenario is that if they are, juicy "reconstruction" contracts will benefit France. That will be the final step to privatize all this -- for the moment free -- water."

History of Materialism
This eight-week course will trace retrospectively the beginning and development of the concept, movement, and âœpracticeâ of materialism in philosophical discourse from the militant materialism (in its two forms, historical materialism and dialectical materialism) of the Marxian moment of the 19th century and in its 20th century appropriations by Gramsci, Althusser (aleatory materialism), and Sartre (critical materialism) to and from its origins in the Pre-Socratic philosophers and the Greek atomists. We will attempt to chart chronologically the suppression of a very rich tradition through readings from Lucretius, 17th century materialism, Enlightenment materialism (Diderot), Mechanical and vulgar materialism and also engage some of the recent debates in neuroscience with philosophical materialism. TheSurprisology Lab
Increase your allure and impact. Every circle of friends needs a great Surprisologist. Being a Surprisologist is not about planning loud surprise parties. Surprisology is much smaller, quieter, and more memorable than that.
Itâ™s about adding a little twist to everyday life, making it more interesting for everyone, includingyourself. Learn about â˜surpriseâ™ as a life philosophy; examine how wonder and surprise impact our memory and bond us with people; discover creative ways to surprise yourselfâ"in business, partnerships, friendships; design and make a surprise to postal-mail to a friend the next day. Graduates of this lab are invited to join and co-create the Surprise Squad, a Joie de vivre group that gathers regularly to create little surprises, wonder, and wander. Led by Dr. LeeAnn Renninger, a social psychologist, and Tania Luna, cofounder of Surprise Industries.

XXXXX HELP XXXXX
It is a wonderful thing, to help. Helping strengthens communities and allows you to meet new friends. With that in mind, we look for one-day volunteer opportunities with no long-term commitment required. We want to be open to fresh ideas and think of help in a broad way. These listings could include anything from a large-scale day-long service project to a local theatre company that needs volunteers for load-in; from an artist looking for film extras to a community garden that needs a few extra hands. Our goal is simply to help groups or individuals that serve the greater good in small but significant ways. Unique and interesting job opportunities are acceptable fare for this section as well. Looking for ways to help out? Need volunteers to get your own community project off the ground? Know of any existing opportunities? Send your requests to MeeO at meeo(at)nonsensenyc.com.

Crochet
My name is Olek, I am a NYC based artist. You might have seen pictures of my most recent installation entitled "Crocheting the Charging Bull" in the Financial District. I am reaching out to you because I am in real need of volunteers, students, etc. to help me crochet my next projects. I wouldn't be lying to you if I said that I am currently submerged by work and, as I am sure you already know, crochet is an extremely time consuming activity which often takes precious time away from the more creative aspects of my artistic endeavors. My studio is currently situated in the Financial District but volunteers can work from home.

Fantasy Reality Film Art Series About Love Looking for a Team.
Hi my names Matthew Silver, I'm a filmmaker and performance Artist. I
have experience creating short films. Both of these films are shot in
Bushwick, NY. I have the equipment and lights. I'm pretty good at all
jobs for filmmaking. Camera work, sound, editing, writing, directing
and acting, but I realize if you want to make a good series, you
really need to delegate tasks. My initial interest was to make a
series based off the Heartpocalypse film I made. Make it interactive,
somehow impacting the Bushwick community and actually help boost the
new consciousness of love, connecting it to the community, creating a
non-profit creative series. Mostly I'm open to meeting people with a
deep interest in creating real magic. People who are really interested
in making really creative films, interested in the community. Looking
for people who are serious, not people who just talk about doing
things and they never really do anything. I'm open about the series,
but it must be filmed mostly in Bushwick, BK because the landscape is
beautiful here, it's also where I live and I love the people. If
interested and really motivated send me some links of films or art you
have done.
