Dear Béu,

Join us at Triskelion next week

These are wildly imagined performances, making up the oddest of dialogues between live music and physical theater. The work integrates movement, vocalization, speech, and music into visually surreal travelogues of the ordinary, made extraordinary by immersion in detail, rhythm, space, sound, and altered states of mind.

Saturday and Sunday we are aided and abetted by the marvelous Owen Walker, a long-time collaborator in Action Theater. Hope to see you there!

Happy Turkey Day (or tofurkey day, for some of you)!

SoGoNo joins IndieGoGo for Bird Suite - please help us fly!

bird costumes 2
Dear Béu,

SoGoNo is pleased to announce that our newest, hottest work, BIRD SUITE, will premiere at FLICfest in Irondale Center this coming January!  And we need your help to finish the piece!

Mioko Mochizuki, our fabulously talented costume designer, has sketched fantastic flamingo and slinky swan costumes for the lovely dancers and we humbly ask for your help to make them come to life! (see the finished bluebird costumes in the photo above...they look even better on the dancers!)

Please consider making a donation now on IndieGoGo - help us make a splash at FLICfest!

Funding deadline is January 7th!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and feathers,

Tanya and Company SoGoNo

What We Need & What You Get:

We need to raise $5,000 to make this all happen.  Costumes are $200 each and we need 7 new ones (see drawings above - they will be gorgeous! and you can have your very own drawings of them!)  We also need $1,000 for photos and video shoot - we plan to take this show on the road and this is our chance to get good images for marketing.  You can get a copy too! And then there's rehearsal space, music costs, and dancer fees.

We have been lucky to have NYSCA support in 2011 which helped get this show going.  However NYSCA for the coming year is uncertain.  Albany is delaying decisions, as you might imagine, and so we are coming to friends for help.  We are applying for other grants (Puffin Foundation of course haha) but our dear supporters are certainly the most reliable source of funding we've ever had.  So please contribute if you can!  There are many fabulous rewards.

We are very excited to announce that Company SoGoNo's Bird Suite will be in the upcoming FLICfest this January!!  This is the second year of a very cool new festival started by Jeramy Zimmerman, and we are super proud to be a part of it.

More details coming soon about our piece, but I can tell you there are some Jersey lawn ornaments that have a Vegas fantasy (yup, flamingos) and some deliciously evil swans...

Please come help us celebrate this coming Sunday at the official launch party, where they will be announcing the lineup and cutting a rug in this AMAZINGLY gorgeous theater space.

Register by August 26th for early bird price!

Hope to see you in the studio!

Tanya & Mariko

Butoh Performance Workshop with Mariko and Tanya
Company SoGono Artistic Director Tanya Calamoneri and former Dairakurakan dancer Mariko Endo team up for the fall series!  First class will be a mini-history lesson, screening of historical butoh pieces, and methodology discussion.  Tanya and Mariko will rotate teaching weeks, and combine their choreographies in the student showing at the end.

Butoh is an image-based movement exploration.  It asks what can a body do, and what is a body?  Each class will begin with a Noguchi gymnastic-based thorough mind-body workout, followed by image explorations, and then choreographic structures.  The 9 weeks will culminate in a student showing, with material from both teachers woven together.

About the teachers
Mariko Endo Reynolds is a professional Japanese Butoh Dancer. She trained with the legendary performer Akira Kasai, one of the co-founders of the Butoh movement. And she has also toured Japan and the United States as a principal dancer in one of Japan's representative Butoh companies, Dairakudakan. In addition to her foundation of dance, she has studied psychoanalysis and energy healing and that influences her approach to dance as a sculpture of consciousness. Since moving to NYC, Mariko has been involved in a variety of projects and teaching Butoh classes for dancers and actors who are looking to strengthen their presence on stage. http://butohnyc.blogspot.com/

Tanya Calamoneri is a choreographer, performer, and movement teacher, and the Artistic Director of Company SoGoNo. She is a former member of Shinichi Koga's inkBoat, and has studied intensively with Minako Seki, Ko Murobushi, Su-En, Yukio Waguri and others since 1999. She is currently completing her doctoral dissertation on butoh training methodology, based on interviews with ten leading butoh masters. Her company's projects have received awards from NY Innovative Theater, the Izzies, and grants from NYSCA, NYFA, AMC Live Music for Dance, Puffin, and Independence Community Foundation. She brings a long history of dance, Action Theater, yoga, and somatic studies to her butoh teaching and choreography. www.sogono.org
