The Multispecies Salon presents:
Hope in Blasted Landscapes
A collage party. We invite you to join us in the Multispecies Salon for a night of collage and bricolage. Bring images and ideas that speak to a central question: In the aftermath of disaster -- in blasted landscapes that have been transformed by multiple catastrophes -- what are the possibilities of biocultural hope?
In 2010 the Multispecies Salon art exhibit visited New Orleans, where Hurricane Katrina was a perfect storm of human engineering follies and powerful natural forces. Even before Katrina, the Gulf of Mexico was home to one of the world's largest dead zones. In the words of one marine ecologist the dead zone "lacks all the kinds of animals we want, and has all the kinds of animals we don't want, it has all these toxic microbes." We invite you to give a presence to these microbes as well as other creatures living and dying in the shadows of human cities.
Bring your own beverages and drawing implements as well as images from science journals, popular magazines, and the internet. We will have a black-and-white printer on hand, a Xerox machine, poster board, scissors, and glue.

In addition to the hub shows, SITE Fest will include more than 30 unique performances at satellite spaces: apartments, studios, street corners, gardens, and galleries. Nonsense is too long. The great thing about the internet is that it doesn't really cost much to run long listings and exhaustive descriptions. It turns out that's ... exhausting. After several complaints and a little deliberation, we're trying a new format: On the first Friday of the month we will run updated ongoing listings in each section: events, learning, and help. Other weeks we're going for leaner, meaner sections. If you're desperate for something to do on an off-Tuesday night we suggest you either look back a few issues ago in your inbox, or poke through our online archives, which you can find under the subscribe page.
Also, a note about better rock shows. Nonsense does not straight list rock shows in New York unless they occur in tandem with puppet shows or jump rope tournaments or in subway tunnels or in graveyards. For listings of good shows, especially shows that feature independent bands at quality venues like Death by Audio and those booked by hard-working promoters like Todd P or Sleep When Dead, consult resources like ohmyrockness.com, brooklynvegan.com/, sleepwhendeadnyc.com/calendar/, garagepunknyc.com, and eardrumnyc.com. For the most exhaustive list of underground shows at unusual venues, track down a copy of the extremely useful -- and handsome -- Showpaper.

Shooting will be in March. Please email lovetunnels(at)gmail.com.
* Calling All Boat Builders and Maritime Creatives: EFA Project Space, Flux Factory, and The Gowanus Studio Space partner to bring you Sea Worthy (working title), an experiment in, exploration of, and tribute to maritime art. Beginning in late spring and continuing through the summer of 2011, Sea Worthy will combine exhibitions, workshops, and artist-led events in and around New York Cityâ™s waterways and waterfronts. With over 70 islands and 700 miles of coastline, New York City is a formidable archipelago; this collective project aims to prompt a discussion of access to and use of the waterways of New York â" and to reclaim, if modestly, the largest open space in the city â" while engaging with related themes in contemporary art practice. We are seeking artists, boat builders, and creative people to participate in this collective and layered endeavor, and we are soliciting proposals for workshops, construction projects, performances, interactive events, and exhibition-re
ady artwork. Participants will contribute to one or more of the three main project areas: Exhibition, Workshops and Projects, Boats for Public Voyage. Deadline: entries must be received via e-mail on or before 5 pm EST on March 7. Applicants will be notified of their involvement on April 2. See: wooloo.org/open-call/entry/186307. If you have any questions, please email ben(at)gowanusstudio.org.
* Sign up for one of the Laundromat Project's Create Change info sessions if you are an artist interested in applying to be a Create Change Professional Development Fellow or Public Artist in Residence. Have your questions answered about the application process and learn more about what the program offers. Applications are due on Thursday, March 24 (midnight). Contact info(at)laundromatproject.org.

This week: Performer and Rubulad Founder Sari Rubinstein
*What were you like as a child?*
"I think I was a pretty nerdy child. I mostly went to hippie school. I was also very sour-pussy because I had experienced the death of a loved one quite early. So I think I was more dark, more gothy. I really liked angry punk rock, as a kid. I became much more flower-powery later in life, after I went to visit my friend in Brazil, where people were much more cheerful than New Yorkers. I started liking happy music, instead of angry music. I read a lot. I wasnâ™t really as social as I am now."

XXXXX SPECTRE PRIORITY XXXXX
Before we had a name, the Spectre Event Horizon Group used to meet at a bar to commiserate and trade what our business friends like to call best practices. The group has expanded since then, but it remains focused on smartening the crowd mind. There are no subject limits; our favorite is the incredible sci-fi present, or anything that goes toward a better understanding of human behavior and our universe's ecology. Our simple intent is to connect good minds with as much quality mind-blowing information as we can freely locate and create a space for the informal trade of specialized investigative research, presented for the non-specialist.
The Spectre email list, which is a separate group from this column, is a moderated open forum. People are encouraged to join and to post. The list is compiled for Nonsense by J. Sinopoli. ***** Printing Replacement Kidneys *****
spectregroup.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/printing-replacement-kidneys/
""It's like baking a cake," Anthony Atala said as he cooked up a fresh kidney on stage at TED. Scanners are used to take a 3-D image of the kidney that needs replacing. A tissue sample about half the size of postage stamp is used to seed the computerized process. Then an organ "printer" works layer-by-layer to build a replacement kidney replicating the patient's tissue. The basis is a combination of cultured human cells and scaffolding built or woven from organic material. In one staggering setup, a patient lies on a table and a flatbed scanner literally scans her wound, followed by a printer that adds just the right types of tissues back on, at the right depth. "You can print right on the patient," Dr. Atala explains. Ninety percent of patients on the organ donation list are waiting for kidneys, a fist-size organ with a profusion of tiny blood vessels. Printing a new kidney takes about six hours, and it lasts for a lifetime - a young man came out on stage who had the surgery
10 years ago. "Scientists and engineers can use the 3D bio printers to place cells of almost any type into a desired pattern in 3D. Researchers can place liver cells on a preformed scaffold, support kidney cells with a co-printed scaffold, or form adjacent layers of epithelial and stromal soft tissue that grow into a mature tooth. The 3D bio-printers include an intuitive software interface that allows engineers to model the tissue construct, before the printer commences physical construction of the organs, cell-by-cell, using automated laser-calibrated print heads."

We look for the sort of classes you circled in college course catalogs but never managed to fit into your schedule. And we also look for the kind of things that no college could teach. Cheap and eclectic is the rule, though all rules get broken occasionally, and we especially love workshops, round-tables, and teachers who wonâ™t take your work out of
your hands and show you how to do it right. One-time listings are categorized weekly, with general recurring classes listed at the end on the first Friday of each month We thrive on your suggestions, so make sure to tell us about upcoming classes that you think are nifty-keen.

Bring the Party to Those Who Can't Get Out Much
Hospital Audiences, Inc. is a non-profit organization working to provide live arts and cultural experiences to people who are disabled, institutionalized, frail elderly, at-risk, and isolated residents of New York City. HAI sends groups from nursing homes, psychiatric care facilities, youth centers, etc. to plays, movies, dance performances, concerts, sporting events, and other cultural activities around Manhattan and the boroughs every week. We believe that art not only uplifts and inspires, but also heals.
Volunteers are needed for these events to act as hosts who greet the groups as they arrive, distribute their tickets, and generally help to make each event a positive social experience. Events are both in the day and evening.

Set Designer
SharkMother Arts Collective, a nonprofit arts collective, is currently seeking a set designer for their upcoming production of Hope for the Flowers, based on Trina Paulusâ™s 1972 childrenâ™s book of the same name. Preliminary rehearsals begin in May, and will be produced during late October at the Lyceum in Park Slope. We are looking to team up with a set designer as soon as possible, as we will be converting fairly raw space into a theater. Although we canâ™t offer a salary, we can offer a small $100 stipend, decent set budget, and the chance to work with a beautiful, non-traditional theater space. We are always looking to form lasting relationships with our collaborators, and hope to find a set designer that is interested in the same.
Please send your resume to sharkmother(at)gmail.com
